Metabolic Testing

Metabolic testing involves two types of tests, RMR & VO2 Max. RMR or Resting Metabolic Rate test involves lying down for 10-20 minutes to test your resting caloric output. VO2 Max is a key indicator of aerobic fitness and can be performed on a variety of different cardio equipment (treadmill, stationary bike).

RMR Test - $85

Testing lasts 10-20 minutes while lying down breathing through a tube.

VO2 Max — $135

Testing lasts ~7-15+ minutes while exercising on specific cardio equipment (treadmill, stationary bike).

  • Resting Metabolic Rate Testing

Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR Testing is the measurement of energy or calories that your body burns each day at rest. This takes into account all your basic bodily processes that keep your body functioning like breathing, maintenance of body heat, heart rate/circulation, digestion, and more.

A typical test takes 10-20 minutes where you will lay down relaxing while breathing through a tube to get the accurate caloric expenditure. Getting this number will allow us to create a meal plan best suited to your goals based on your accurate physiological data.

  • VO2 Max Testing

VO2 Max is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. VO2 Max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during an intense bout of exercise.

A VO2 Max test is a graded exercise test where the intensity level increases each minute until failure/exhaustion. A typical test can last anywhere from 7-15 minutes, not including warm up and cool down. Testing can be done on a treadmill for walking or running, on a stationary bike, elliptical, or rowing machine.

Pre-Testing Protocols

RMR Testing

  • Must be rested for 48 hours prior to testing

  • NO heavy/intense exercise for 48 hours prior to testing

  • Light walking/yoga/stretching is okay 24-28 hours prior to testing

  • NO caffeine 8-12 hours prior to testing

  • Avoid alcohol or drugs 24 hours prior to testing

  • Must be fasted for 8-12 hours prior to testing

  • Drinking water before testing is okay

  • Try to avoid vitamins or supplements the morning of testing

  • Taking daily medications is okay prior to testing

  • Wear comfortable clothes to lie down during testing

VO2 Max Testing

  • Must be rested for 24 hours prior to testing

  • NO heavy/intense exercise for 48 hours prior to testing

  • Light walking/yoga/stretching is okay 24 hours prior to testing

  • NO caffeine 8-12 hours prior to testing

  • Avoid alcohol or drugs 24 hours prior to testing

  • Must be fasted for 3-4 hours prior to testing

  • Drinking water before testing is okay

  • Try to avoid vitamins or supplements prior to testing

  • Wear clothes that can be heavily exercised in and appropriate footwear (sneakers/tennis shoes)

Body Composition Exam

  • Women need to wear a tank top or t-shirt over a sports bra and loose shorts that can be rolled down over the hips

  • Men need to wear a t-shirt and loose shorts that can be rolled down over the hips

Body Composition Analysis

  • Body Composition Exam

A 7-site body composition exam will be analyzed using skin fold calipers. This will determine the ratio of lean to fat mass and the distribution of fat on the body.

This kind of analysis is helpful when trying to obtain a weight or performance based goal. It can give more information to help aid in training load, volume, and intensity.
